Chapter Sixty-Six: The Gravity of Longing

Iris
What are you fighting for, Suri?
Suri stood before Iris as she sat at her throne.
Suri
Humanity.
Iris laughed.
Iris
You lie.
Suri
I don't. I'll gladly give my life for them.
Iris
For him you mean, right?
Suri didn't say anything.
Iris
The facade is see through. You're doing this for him and in doing so for yourself. You're trying to pass it off as something more than that but you are lying.
Iris laughed.
Iris
Every action is a selfish one. Don't kid yourself into thinking anything more, Suri.
Suri charged and Iris stood on her throne and jumped over her head.
Iris
Too slow.
The throne shattered into pieces as Suri's hand went down into it.
Iris
Ask yourself this...
Iris put her hands together.
Iris
Where is he now?
A wall of energy Iris created move towards Suri quickly.

Amros let go of his staff and it stayed in place. He stretched his arms.
Amros
This is the end, brother.
Amros began to rise and as he did he was surrounded by a circle of wind so fast it was visible as gray movement.
Ximendos
That one already?
From all around tornadoes began to form. Ximendos could feel his body being pulled from all directions.
Ximendos
You, born of air while Amya was born of Earth.
He stuck his sword into the ground.
Ximendos
While I was born of fire and sheer power.
He flew forward into the circle Amros was in. The entire area was covered in a green light. Ximendos dropped down to the ground.
Ximendos
Coward.
Ximendos was now surrounded by four giant balls of wind.
Ximendos
Won't even face me head on.
Small tornadoes shot towards Ximendos from them. He blasted green energy at each one.
Ximendos
Pathetic.
And then Ximendos heard it.
Ximendos
You'd take us all with that?
Ximendos turned around and saw a wall of dust coming towards him carrying rubble and more.
Ximendos
Impressive.
Ximendos was engulfed by the wave traveling over 500 miles per hour.

Syn swung his claw to the ground and blood covered it.
Syn
You're not fighting me.
Akasha stood holding her shoulder while it bled.
Syn
You left me for dead once...do it again.
Akasha
You always were a fool, Simon.
Two fingers extended towards her. She fell to the ground and extended four into his thigh. He screamed. With her other hand a blast of blue electricity hit him in the chest sending him flying at least fifteen feet. She stood up.
Akasha
I just don't want to kill you.
A tail began to show from under her cloak.
Akasha
Once I release I won't have a choice.
From the rubble of the wall Syn flew into a tail appeared and then a claw grabbed the wall.
Akasha
Release.

Darby dropped down in front of Orthak.
Darby
Hello Orthak.
Orthak jumped back and screamed.
Darby
I've come to put an end to you and Ximendos.
An explosion of sound came from their right. They turned. Orthak screamed and disappeared into the ground.
Darby
Amros and Ximendos are going at it. This will make things more difficult.
He ran towards the destruction.
Darby
(If I can kill them both this would help us greatly. I wonder if I am capable of doing that as well as killing Orthak. I might be the one that ends up dead.)

Gemma
Arkain...
She looked closely at Cameron who she did not know.
Gemma
Who is he?
Ilias sat down.
Ilias
That is Cameron. Are you able to see him also?
Gemma nodded.
Ilias
As expected.
He put his hands together. Fallen walked towards the door.
Fallen
While I'd love to stay and chat, I have a beautiful girl to see.
He left the room.
Ilias
It will begin as soon as he arrives.
Gemma
He?
She turned to Ilias. He nodded.
Ilias
My last and final accomplice.
Gemma
You're not going to hurt him, right?
Ilias
I don't see why it must come to that. As long as he cooperates things should move smoothly.
Gemma
And if he doesn't?
Ilias
That's doubtful. Although if he does we'll cross that bridge when we get there.
Gemma gulped.
Ilias
You still have feelings for him, don't you?
Gemma turned to face Ilias.
Gemma
He promised me he'd never leave me. He was the first person to say he loved me aside from my family. That promise means something to me.
Ilias
How long will you hang onto those words? He has filled your head with words that don't mean anything. He doesn't love you, Gemma. It's best that you start to understand that now.
Gemma
He knows I killed his mother, doesn't he?
Ilias
I'm sure of it.
Gemma looked back at Arkain as she saw him running his hands down the box he was trapped in.
Gemma
He said no matter what...no matter what happened he'd still care about me.
Ilias
Empty words, Gemma. People say things they don't mean in order to make up for themselves being off balance with reality.
He turned to face the box.
Ilias
If Arkain knows the truth he will seek to kill you.
Gemma felt her eyes water up.
Ilias
However, I won't let that happen. You will be allies whether he likes it or not.
Gemma
If he means to kill me, won't you let him?
Ilias turned to her.
Ilias
Why would you say such a thing?
Gemma
Maybe I deserve it.
Ilias
Nonsense.
Gemma
If that will make Arkain feel better about what I did he should be able to have that.
She turned to look at Arkain again.
Gemma
That would be my atonement. That way he'll find closure.
Ilias grabbed Gemma by her shoulders.
Ilias
Enough with the bad philosophy. You need no atonement and he'll never find closure.
He let go of her and slouched back in his seat.
Ilias
There is no such thing. What's broken now cannot be fixed.
Gemma
I will find atonement. Even if you don't believe it's possible. I did something to Arkain I never meant to do. Something I still can't live with myself for. Arkain deserves to be happy and I, well I deserve to die.
Ilias
Oh Gemma.
He rubbed his face.
Gemma
Just let me have that, okay?
Ilias
Does what I want mean nothing to you? The desire of your husband?
Gemma didn't say anything.
Ilias
A difficult choice, no? Such a paradox, isn't it?


Arkain
Where the fuck am I?
Arkain said in the dark.
Cameron
I'm here too.
Cameron lit a ball of fire in the middle of the box.
Arkain
Looks like we're trapped in a box.
Cameron
This isn't something Fallen is capable of.
Arkain
He did something though. It look like he blasted us. Why would he do that though?
Cameron ran his hands on the walls.
Cameron
I have no idea. These walls are laced with energy. Most likely a force field.
Arkain
Can we break them?
Cameron
Probably not. There is no point of wasting any energy here though.
Arkain sat down next to the fire.
Arkain
So we're stuck?
Cameron
Seems like it. They say patience is a virtue.
Arkain
They were never trapped in a black box.
He sat down across from Arkain.

As the alarm for the Black City rang, Amya walked towards the main entrance.
Woman's voice
Southern wall is under attack. Shield power at eighty five percent.
Amya exited the base.
Amya
This should do the trick.
She slammed her hands to the ground and behind her a giant wall of sand shot up and towered over the entire northern half of the base.
Amya
Show yourself, Kasper.
At a distance away from her Kasper appeared.
Amya
(I better be careful with this. His level of sheer power is only matched by my brother and Hayden.)
A giant red beam of energy flew her way.
Walls of sand rose to block it and tumbled one by one as it flew towards her without losing speed. She dodged it.
Amya
Damn him.
A golden chain wrapped itself around her ankle.
Amya
Clever!
Her entire leg turned into sand. She stood on one leg.
Grey
It has been too long, Amya.
He was now standing ten feet away from her.
Grey
Last I remember you were fighting on the side of the humans.
He stood calmly with his hands in his pockets.
Grey
Now it seems you've gone and become one of the Empire's dogs.
Sand moved past her and ran into an electric barrier around Grey.
Grey
The task has been given to me to silence you. You're going to need to pull out your Eagle's sword already, Amya. If not you won't stand a chance.
A wall of sand covered Grey.
Grey
You Anselia siblings are so arrogant.
A current of electric power broke up the sand wall.
Amya
(He really has come to kill me.)
Her face began to turn into sand. It fell down and floated up.
Amya
This palace was built on top of a giant reservoir of sand for a reason.
Grey
To do battle, I'm sure.
She laughed hysterically.
Amya
You were a fool to come, Grey. Either way, one of us dies here.
Grey
I'll make sure that one of us is you.
She laughed even louder.

Kassle
What do you suggest we do?
Azusa
Get the fuck out of here.
Kade
Run away? We aren't pussies.
Azusa
I am.
Keir appeared on Kassle's shoulder.
Keir
We can return another time.
Azusa
And do what?
Keir
Take the Sky Walkers, the half-dead, and the elf.
Kade
We didn't even get to use our powers! We barely started fighting.
Kassle
It would be a shame to leave Hayden the impression that we're weak.
Azusa
Well leave them a gift.
Kassle
Like?
Kade
I want to stay and fight.
He said sadly.
Azusa
How about we send this place to the ground?
Kassle
That wouldn't be wise if there was a possibility of Ximendos finding out.
Azusa
He won't. He will be too busy I am sure.
Kassle
Very well.
They all nodded. Kassle whistled. Out of thin air Aries and Virgo appeared. The giant wolves picked them both up.
Kassle
Kade and I will destroy this palace.
Azusa
We'll see you at home.
Kade
Fuck yeah!
They ran off towards the battle.


Iris dodged each of Suri's swings. Suri was knocking down walls as she swung and swung.
Suri
(She's toying with me.)
Iris
I am.
Suri was almost startled but then realized Iris was capable of reading minds.
Iris
So slow I even have time to do this.
Suri
Well then.
Suri went bite her finger.
Iris
Not this time.
An energy shield formed around Suri's hands and slammed them to the ground.
Iris
You should have activated that power before you walked in here.
Iris walked forward and lifted her right hand up.
Iris
It's a shame, really. I was hoping this fight could have been a bit more entertaining.
A small white sword appeared in her hand.
Iris
It doesn't matter though.
She yawned.
Iris
It's going to be nice to finally get you out of the way.
She lifted the sword to her Suri's face.
Iris
Goodbye, Suri.
She moved it forward.

Amros stood before a green circle of energy.
Amros
There was no one battling in that area. I made sure of that.
The green energy disappeared.
Ximendos
Always cautious, right brother?
Amros nodded. Amros drew his sword.
Ximendos
I thought we were going to be serious?
Amros threw his sword into the sky.
Amros
We are.
With a flash a giant white eagle was above them.
Ximendos
The mighty Wynson.
Ximendos looked up at the bird as it flew above.
Ximendos
I haven't seen that beautiful beast in so long.
He pulled out his black sword.
Ximendos
Very well. Speak, Zarathustra!
A giant black dragon appeared behind Ximendos.
Amros
We've finally arrived at the end.
Zara began to rise to the sky.
Ximendos
Zara, it's time for dinner.
Zarathustra flew towards Wynson.
Amros
(He can handle himself.)
Amros charged towards Ximendos and swung at his head. Ximendos shifted to the side but was blasted by a gust of wind to the ground.
Amros
A thousand fists!
Ximendos was hit into the air and began to get punched in every direction and was unable to stop the invisible attacks.
Amros
Wind spear.
Amros raised his hand to the sky and a spear made of gray wind formed in his hand. He tossed it at Ximendos. It hit something else though.
Amros
I was waiting for you.
Orthak stood below Ximendos as he was getting punched.
Orthak screamed. Darby landed behind Amros and stabbed him in the shoulder with his sword.
Amros
Bastard!
Amros blew Darby back and held his shoulder.
Darby
(Got him.)
Darby stood up straight. Ximendos landed next to Orthak.
Ximendos
That was painful. Thank you Darby for breaking that attack.
Darby
It wasn't for your benefit.
Ximendos
Nonetheless, the a thousand fists attack is an attack I wish to avoid.
Amros was dripping blood on the ground.
Amros
I wanted this to just be between us, Amron.
Ximendos
I didn't invite Darby. He's one of Fallen's puppets.
Amros
Fallen's puppets?
They all moved quickly as Zara and Wynson crashed into the ground. Wynson erupted with sound as Zara bit into his right wing. Darby landed.
Darby
(What power. If I face either one of those animals I'll be dead in an instant. They're pure energy.)
Amros
I don't like cheap shots.
Amros swung his staff at Darby and he deflected it with his sword.
Darby
All's fair in war.
Amros
I won't complain.
Darby was sent flying by a blast of wind. Ximendos landed behind Amros.
Ximendos
Got ya.
Ximendos almost grabbed his neck but Amros jumped back. Ximendos then disappeared.
Amros
Shit!
Amros turned around just in time to see a wall of fire coming towards him. It was stopped by a wall of wind Amros put up in front of him.
Amros
(This won't be easy with Darby in the way. Damn the Syn clan.)

Akasha's tail pierced Syn's shoulder. Syn and Akasha now had long black tails and giant claws as hands and feet. They were almost completely released.
Syn
Amanda!
His tailed pierced her stomach. She spat blood out. She slashed his chest and he fell to the ground. She screamed. She raised her hands to the sky and her hands began to spark with electricity.
Pathion
No you don't!
Pathion landed on her back and sunk his teeth into her neck. She screamed as she grabbed him by his back.
Pathion
Give me all you got, bitch!
With her free hand she stabbed slashed him into pieces. Syn's tail entered her forehead and came out the back. He jumped on her and began slashing away at her body.
Pathion
(He has lost it.)
Akasha's tail wrapped itself around Syn and began to suffocate him. He screamed.
Her hand healed and her entire body began to as well.
Pathion
(We'll figure out a way to kill her.)

Hayden
Go find Nick.
Roselyn disappeared. Hayden stared at the monster Tusa now was.
Hayden
Where did Velis go?
He said to Roselyn and Malic's head that was now lying on the floor.
Malic
I don't know! One moment she was holding me and the next my head fell to the floor! By the way, WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO ABOUT THIS?
Hayden
Kill it.
A silver cord flew towards Malic's head.
Malic
Oh no!
Hayden cut it in half with his right hand.
Hayden
This is Tusa of the Syn clan. He's under the impression that he's immortal. His part in this story was short.
Hayden flew forward and into Tusa's mouth. Within a second he was also standing ten feet behind the body of Tusa. Tusa's body fell to the ground.
Hayden
This is his heart.
Hayden was holding a green heart in his hand that beat quickly.
Hayden
He will begin to rebuild himself in just a moment.
From Hayden's hand a spike began to emerge.
Hayden
I won't let that happen.
He stabbed the green heart and it screamed.
Hayden
There is no such thing as immortal.
He dropped the green chunk to the ground.
Vesper
How dare you!
Hayden turned to see Vesper standing by Malic's head.
Vesper
I can't believe you killed him! He was my friend and my ally.
Hayden
Should that mean something to me? I'll send you with him next, Vesper of the Syn.
He turned to face her.
Hayden
I hope you're not as easy to kill as he was. The Syn clan is held so high and I no longer think the caution is necessary.
Hayden stepped on what once was Tusa's heart.
Hayden
I never enjoyed killing...but some of you must die.
He appeared behind her.
Hayden
Well?

Nick
It's not you. It can't be you.
Steven walked up next to Munro and Germ.
Germ
Oh but it is. We've reanimated him. Don't you like it? Your friend, your best friend has returned to you.
Nick
Shut up! Shut up you fucking monster!
Munro laughed.
Munro
I think we've angered him.
Germ
I thought he would have appreciated our gift. People can be so unappreciative.
Munro
That's why I am no longer giving gifts after this.
Germ
Not even to me?
Munro
Not even to you.
Germ
Fine.
They both turned to Nick.
Germ
Sure you won't change your mind?
Nick didn't say anything.
Munro
Just hug and make up.
Nick
Why are you doing this?
Nick was now crying.
Munro

Nick
To break me? Is that what you wanted? My mom, my dad and everyone left me when I was younger. Steven was the only person that ever got who I was. He was an asshole but he was with good intentions. He wrote his heart into his book.
Munro
This one?
Munro held Steven's book in his hands. Steven moaned like they did in zombie movies.
Nick
You took that away from him. You took that away from me. You killed the first person I was ever friends with. You bastards. You think you can toy with people and get away with it?
Germ

Nick
That's not Steven. That's just his image. Nothing more. Once something dies, you can't make it live.
He spat on the floor.
Nick
He's dead and you did this to him. He'll never finish that book now because of you.
Munro
Wrong.
Nick looked at Munro shocked by this one word.
Munro
He did finish it. We read it, actually.
Germ
We might be masochistic, but we aren't heartless. I felt a bit of regret after I finished it. He was just a young kid trying to make the best of life. He always felt like he was a puzzle piece that never fit into anyone. His family resented him and his friends that he valued more than anything else never seemed to give him the appreciation he always longed for. Even you, Nicolas.
Nick

He's not lying. It says it in this book. All he wanted to do was be a fire in the dark life him and his loved ones had to walk.
Munro yawned.
Munro
Yet no one cared. Not even you. How sad, if you think about it. That's the story of all humans though, is it not? They care more for people who do very little for them than the people who give them their all. How tragic.
Germ
It doesn't matter now. I watched his life whither away in front of me and I can't take that back. At the very least, you can join him now, Nicolas. Go to wherever he might be. Maybe then you can appreciate the friend you once had.
Nick

They got serious again.
Nick
You're right. I wasn't the best friend I could have been. He was a friend that was always willing to help no matter when and anytime. It's a shame that it all has expired. He always felt like he was under some obligation to indulge every whim of the people he loved. I was so ungrateful. I took, he gave and he gave...and I kept forgetting it.
He laughed.
Nick
You got me. You did. Life's just one big fucking joke on me.
He began to try and move.
Nick
I'm tired of laughing. I'm tired of being laughed at. If I could take it all back I would. However, I can't.
Steven began to walk forward.
Nick
I'm a goddamn hypocrite.
A knife appeared in Steven's hand and he raised it towards neck.
Nick
I'm sorry, Steven. It seems like I'm just the queen of apologies, aren't I? You can't hear me but I truly mean it. I'm sorry.
Munro
What the fuck?
Leaves began to fall from the sky.
Nick
Life's about making many mistakes. You always said that. Have to say fuck it and just work through it all, remember?
Steven continued to slowly walk forward.
Nick
Not here anymore to tell me what to do, are you? Steer me in the right direction or just cloud my mind with whatever philosophy you had in your head.
He was now ten feet away.
Nick
I'll make sure everyone reads it. Make sure they all knew who you were. I can do that much. Make up for the shitty friend I was. Hell, the shitty friend I still am. I know, what a pathetic offer of atonement, right?
A tear hit the ground.
Nick
You always were...different. Even now you have a smirk on your face. In your own words...
Nick smiled in front of the smirking Steven with a knife held to his neck now.
Nick
Fucking puta.
Green vines erupted from the ground and wrapped themselves around Steven and kept the knife from cutting Nick's throat. Green vines began to also wrap around Munro and Germ.
Germ
I think that's enough for today.
Munro
Mom already left.
Germ
We shall follow. We'll kill him some other time. Let him think about today for the rest of his life until then.
They disappeared. Nick was now able to move. He stood in front of Steven's moving corpse.
Nick
Long way from home, Steven.
He took the knife from his hand. Steven moaned. The leaves stopped falling.
Nick
I can't even hurt this.
The vines disappeared. Nick began to cry again.
Nick
I hate crying.
He laughed.
Nick
You were always okay with it.
Steven walked forward.
Nick
Stop walking.
He kept going.
Nick
None of you is there, after all.
Steven reached Nick.
Nick
What are you going to do?
Steven grabbed Nick by the neck and began to choke him.
Nick
(Damn you. I guess this is fitting for an end.)
Nick closed his eyes.
Nick
(With friends like these, who needs-
Steven released Nick's neck. Nick opened his eyes. Steven hugged Nick.
Nick
Friends.
Then the corpse of Steven loosened its grip. Nick noticed the power Germ had over it was fading. It was hard to keep his composure.
Nick
Time to go home, Steven.
Nick caught the body before it hit the ground. The leaves from the ground moved towards them and covered his entire body. Nick stood up next to his now wrapped body. The leaves then blew away in the wind leaving nothing.
Nick
See you soon.


Velis sat down in the grass at the hideout they once occupied. They still left their stuff behind to return to later.
Velis
I guess he made sure I left the palace if it got too heated.
She smiled. She knew he loved her. She saw a camera lying in the grass next to a blanket.
Velis
(It's Arkain's camera.)
She walked over and picked it up. As she did she noticed a flooding of leaves began to form behind her on top of where the beach began.
Velis
What the hell? It's a body wrapped in leaves.
She walked up to it with the camera in her hand. On the floor next to the body the leaves spelled out something for whomever was there to read.
Velis
Don't fucking touch him? signed Nick. Point taken.
She sat down next to the body and turned on the camera. She flicked through pictures. She laughed at some of young Arkain doing what she thought was adorable and she admired the beautiful pictures his mother took in her spare time.
Velis
Memories are something else, aren't they?
Her eyes suddenly opened wide because of something she could not believe.
Velis
Impossible...

Amya landed on her feet but just barely.
Amya
(I've grown rusty. If I could just lay a hand on him I'd be able to end this.)
A giant red beam flew at her again. She dodged it but just barely. She fell on her side.
Amya
You are amazing, Grey.
He was hovering in the air above her.
Amya
But this fight isn't over yet.
The entire ground behind her flew towards Grey. His shield kept him safe.
Grey
(She can't continue this forever. The barrage of earth must end soon. She's a persistent woman though.)
Amya landed on the top of his shield.
Amya
Gotcha.
Her Eagle's blade entered his shield and almost slide across his face. He landed on the ground below and she did soon after.
Grey
I told you that you'd need that.
Amya
You were right.
She threw the blade up in the sky and in a flash a giant brown eagle was above her.
Amya
Seneca won't be as hesitant as I am. I may claim to want to kill you.
She wiped the blood off the side of her head.
Amya
Yet I can't find it in me to do so. Does a teacher ever lose the love they have for their most prized student?
Her smile faded.
Amya
Eat him, Seneca.

Iris
Where did you get that?
Iris' blade was stopped by a blade Suri held in her hands.
Suri
My dad gave it to me. It's made of Elven bone. Same as yours.
Iris
I didn't know Hayden had it in him.
Suri slashed at Iris and she jumped back.
Iris
I can't say I'm not impressed.
She smiled.
Iris
However...
She tossed her blade on the floor behind her. There was a flash of light and behind her stood a giant white dragon.
Iris
Can yours do that?


Cameron
Do you ever think of your mom?
Arkain
Haven't you asked me this before?
Cameron
I don't know.
Arkain rubbed the back of his neck around where his birthmark was.
Arkain
Everyday. What about you?
Cameron
Not since the day it happened. I was never close to her. Christian is always there though. Even when I'm not trying to think about my younger brother for a change.
Arkain
It's natural, don't sweat it.
Cameron
I know, it's just I wish he was here, that's all. Even though I know it's impossible.
Arkain
I know what you mean.
Cameron
It's nice to have someone who can almost understand.
Arkain
Likewise. Even without the bond of loss, we're a lot alike. Almost as if we've met before all this, you know know?
Cameron
Like in a past life?
Arkain

He yawned.
Arkain
You never know.
Cameron

Arkain
Didn't we just agree we're a lot alike? If that's the case, I'm one of two kinds. You're the other, dumbass.
Cameron laughed. He missed laughing.
Cameron

Ilias
I understand if you hate me right now, Gemma. If so, I just want you to love me in return in light of that.
He tried to grab her hand but she pulled away.
Ilias
If you have something to say I want you to say it. I've always been a big believer in if you have nothing nice to say, say it anyways. I love you, Gemma.
Gemma

She stood up.
Gemma
You are a beautiful man with a black heart. Thank you for your thoughts...
She walked down the to the level of the black box.
Gemma
But I'm done.
She looked at Arkain and then turned and walked away.
Fallen
Well that was dramatic.
Luna
Seriously.
Fallen and Luna were standing at the door on the other side of the room.
Ilias
She has a twisted view of things.
Fallen
Sort of like us, right?
Ilias
How do you mean?
Fallen
Like our view on humanity. Whether to cherish or despise them. It's hard when humanity is tugging at your heart from both sides. One side to hate it and one to love.
Luna
How poetic.
She licked his face.
Ilias
Get out of here, you two.
They left. Ilias stood looking down at Cameron and Arkain talking to each other.
Ilias
You'll know the truth very soon. I don't think it will set you free though. It never does. It didn't set Gemma free did it, Arkain? Nor you or Cameron.
He yawned.
Ilias
They all want atonement. They all want to do this while knowing the truth. While everyone knows the truth. The truth doesn't set you free. It doesn't make the grass any greener. Gemma is restless because of you, Arkain. She speaks in her dreams as if the monster in her still moves. There's a dream in her head that just won't go away because of you. The gravity of longing that instill these dreams inside her head are something I don't think I'm capable of understanding.
He rubbed his eyes.
Ilias
Not yet at least. Oh the dreams you give her, foolish boy.
He laughed.
Ilias
I must admit, I am a bit jealous.

Chapter Sixty-Five: If they were Angels

Gemma sat down on the bed Ilias and her would be sharing.
Gemma
You wanted to talk to me?
Ilias shut the door.
Gemma
